Because there are certain lines we want in our breeding program, but not the space on our laps, some of our dogs live in "guardian" homes where they get all love and lap space they deserve. We retain the breeding rights, and their family gets a wonderful Havanese to care for and cherish. See FAQ below.

A guardian home is a family or person who adopts a “pick of the litter” puppy to raise as their own pet. The dog is a pet in every way for the family/person, however they are under contract to provide the dog for breeding purposes. The dog remains under the ownership of Ida Mountain Havanese until the contract has been fulfilled, usually 3-4 litters for females or until a male is no longer needed. After this time the dog is signed over to the family/person it has been living with and knows as their home.
You want the joy of a dog in your life, but you are still looking to do some travelling for the next several years. Guardian homes that take a female will see their dog returned to the breeder for whelping for 6-7 weeks. During this time travel can be scheduled knowing that your pet is being well cared for with their previous “dog family” and is not in a kennel.
You may have wanted a Havanese and have money to provide the day-to-day care and maintenance for a pet, although lack the initial funds to purchase a registered purebred dog. There is a nominal deposit of $200 for dogs in a guardian home. Once the contract is fulfilled the dog is signed over at no additional charge.
You like the idea of being involved in a breeding program to help improve the breed and bring joy into others’ lives through the love of a pet, but you are not interested in dealing with puppies.
You would like a younger dog and are not interested in the “baby puppy” phase or you do not want to do basic training and housetraining. Some dogs may be 6 months or older when looking for their guardian home.
The guardian home pays for the day-to-day care, health and maintenance requirements of the dog. This would include food, vaccinations and any injuries sustained in the care of the guardian. Guardians are required to take their dog to the breeder’s vet for any health or fertility testing (which is paid for by the breeder).
Homes of a Male/Stud dog will provide access to the dog as needed for breeding purposes.
Homes of a Female are required to track the heat cycle and provide the dog for breeding at the appropriate time. Towards the end of the pregnancy the dog is returned to the breeder for whelping (6-7 weeks duration). Guardians can visit at any time during whelping.
The first and most important is a family/person who can provide a loving home. They can also provide care that is consistent with good animal husbandry such as, socialization, regular exercise, high quality food, and coat maintenance for either long or short hair.
Can provide a safe environment for a puppy which includes the protection of a fenced yard.
Must live within 2-3 hours of Salmon Arm, BC or willing to drive and meet half way between places.
